Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking official said the attack rendered him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
