The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
