Intense Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to stay indoors as powerful gusts lash the nation.

Severe gales hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 households without power and forced officials to call off more than 100 air travel services, according to domestic outlets.

The gales are impacting the entire southern region and lower areas of the North Island, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in core zones encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been urged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for further utility disruptions.

Broad Damage and Crisis Measures

This outage appears to be affecting homes mainly in the southern region, although agencies report that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have reported that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a individual was killed after being impacted by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services in and out of the urban area have been cancelled because of the gusts, and certain highways and community centers are shut down.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have issued a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Strike Action During Severe Conditions

The wild winds on this day occur while tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been termed a "significant labor action", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the severe conditions has compelled them to change some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or cancelled.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Agencies have issued flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding forest fires.
